Resorts’ Snow Totals Include Over 30 Feet of Seasonal Snowfall, Base Depths Over 12 Feet
Lake Tahoe, CA & NV (Feb. 22, 2008) – The Ski Lake Tahoe resorts are celebrating some of the best seasonal snow to date in decades, with even more powder days in the forecast from cold winter storms expected to deliver over three feet of snow through the weekend. The storm, currently delivering light, fluffy snow to the Lake Tahoe region, is yet another powerful Sierra storm system that follows an intense month of snowfall that has put snowpack totals above 150 percent of normal for the months of January and February. With a snowpack over 12 feet in select locations around the lake region, several Ski Lake Tahoe resorts will keep the lifts turning well into May, which is an annual occurrence due to Tahoe’s typically longer winter seasons. “The consistently cold storm systems we’re experiencing this winter have created incredible conditions at the Ski Lake Tahoe resorts. This is actually common for our region, as Lake Tahoe typically receives over 400 inches of average annual snowfall, which is more than any other major snowsports destination in the U.S.,” said John Wagnon, president of Ski Lake Tahoe. “Based on record snowfall in January, Lake Tahoe has the best conditions in the country right now, and that will make for some fantastic late-spring skiing…another attribute Lake Tahoe is known for.” Several resorts are boasting over 30 feet of seasonal snowfall to date that has enabled base depths to rise over 12 feet in select locations, putting base levels among the highest in the country. The month of March is traditionally a very snowy month in Tahoe and spring snowstorms in the Sierra are known to bring huge amounts of snow. With snowpack levels well above normal and the resorts being just halfway into the winter ski season, Tahoe resorts could expect record conditions for the 2007-08 season. The Lake Tahoe area typically has better weather conditions than any resort area in the U.S., with the highest annual snowfall totals in the country combined with over 300 days of sunshine at slightly more comfortable winter temperatures. Tahoe experiences weather systems generated from Alaska that bring extremely cold temperatures and significant amounts of Pacific moisture resulting in super-sized storms yielding excessive amounts of snowfall.
