Unbridled Block Parties, Music Festivals Attract Thousands of Holiday Revelers
Lake Tahoe, CA/NV (December 22, 2011) – While today marks the first official day of winter, skiers and snowboarders have actually been schussing down the slopes in Lake Tahoe for over a month thanks to early season storms and the largest snowmaking systems on the West Coast. Ideal temperatures for supplemental snowmaking have enabled all seven Ski Lake Tahoe resorts to open with most boasting top-to-bottom turns and terrain options for every ability level. In addition to great on-mountain experiences, visitors to Lake Tahoe over the holidays can revel in world-class entertainment, enjoy festive holiday celebrations and experience one of the wildest New Year’s Eve parties found at a winter destination.
Significant investments made by Lake Tahoe ski resorts during the last few seasons have included state-of-the-art snowmaking systems capable of providing reliable early season coverage on the most prominent runs on the mountains. These cutting-edge systems have allowed resorts to open additional chairlifts and terrain on almost a daily basis with crews working around the clock in the midst of man-made blizzards. Upgraded grooming fleets have also resulted in a higher quality snow surface and new partnerships with industry-leading designers have led to revamped terrain parks that are already in mid-winter form. Long-range forecasters remain optimistic for a return of another powerful La Niña weather pattern that resulted in record-shattering snowfall for the region last season.
“Guests headed to Lake Tahoe for the upcoming holiday season can expect clear roads, bluebird skies, top-to-bottom skiing and riding and a festive holiday atmosphere,” said John Wagnon, president of Ski Lake Tahoe. “Visitors can take in spectacular lake views while enjoying a wide variety of terrain options by day and high-energy performances from world-renowned entertainers by night – a ski destination experience that is unique to Lake Tahoe.”
As a destination, the Reno/Lake Tahoe area offers unparalleled 24/7 nightlife options with world renowned big-name acts slated to appear this holiday season worthy themselves of a trip to the region. Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe offers stay-and-ski packages with a number of Reno casino properties where Wiz Khalifa, 2011 BET Best New Artist of the Year, will be performing along with hip-hop legends Common and Aesop Rock. Other noteworthy music acts performing in the Reno area include Huey Lewis and the News as well as Big and Rich with Cowboy Troy. Traditional theater and opera fans can take in performances of The Nutcracker and Peter Pan while those looking to enjoy an evening of side-splitting laughter can catch comedians Katt Williams, Adam Corolla and Mike E. Winfield of NBC’s The Office.
Lake Tahoe itself is bracing for the annual gathering of revelers that congregate at the casino corridor near the base of Heavenly Mountain Resort for the biggest slope-side New Year’s Eve block party on the planet. Tens of thousands bedazzled, bead-wearing, whistle-blowing carousers spill out into the blockaded streets of South Lake Tahoe for the countdown at midnight. Heavenly Mountain Resort has put together a full slate of events leading up to New Year’s Eve, including professional ice skating shows, ice sculptors, a four-day concert series in Heavenly Village and “Unbuckled” après parties at the new mid-mountain Tamarack Lodge. The fun started December 19th and culminates December 31st with A Heavenly New Year's Celebration showcasing live music, extreme ice sculpting, a Gondola ball drop and a fireworks show.
This season Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort has teamed up with Montbleu Resort Casino and Spa to offer stay-and-ski packages and Vegas-style debauchery including a dusk ‘til dawn New Year’s Eve pool party at the Onsen Spa complete with world-renown DJs, silk aerialists and more than $50,000 in lighting alone. Not to be outdone, Vex Nightclub at Harrah’s Casino will have DJs spinning until the wee hours while dancers perform on elevated catwalks and caged stages throughout the venue.
Kirkwood Mountain Resort is also planning a New Year’s Eve firework show with the unique option to reserve a seat aboard the resort’s customized snowcat for a mountaintop champagne toast followed by dinner at the Wall Bar. The resort is also sponsoring the inaugural Snow Globe Music Festival taking place at Lake Tahoe Community College in South Lake Tahoe from December 29-31. The three day festival will combine skiing and snowboarding with live music on multiple stages from headline acts such as Pretty Lights, Dilated Peoples, Thievery Corporation, Bassnectar and The Glitch Mob.
On the North Shore, skiers and riders can grab a drink at the après ski Pre-New Year’s Eve Cocktail Party at Alpine Meadows before catching the new Squaw/Alpine Express to join Squaw Valley guests for a champagne toast and the resort’s annual fireworks show. Following the festivities, guests can head to the Olympic House for a dance party with funk band Mojo Green and DJ Zeb Early. Guests can also opt for a ride up Squaw’s Aerial Tram for a family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration complete with dinner, dancing and an East Coast New Year’s Eve countdown at 9:00pm PST so that the little ones can still get enough shuteye to hit the slopes the next day.
Northstar California Resort is also hosting its annual Fire & Ice New Year’s Eve Celebration with DJs on the village stage and live music from tribute band Led Zeppelin 2 – The Live Experience followed by a fireworks display at 9:00pm. The modern-mountain village has been transformed into a virtual winter wonderland complete with twinkling white lights, festive decorations and countless family-friendly diversions such as shopping, dining, ice skating, s’mores and more.
Destination travelers headed to the Lake Tahoe region during the 2011-12 winter season will be greeted by $100 million in capital improvements that are underway at the Ski Lake Tahoe resorts designed to enhance the guest experience well into the future. The recently remodeled Reno-Tahoe International Airport has also announced it will be dedicating an additional $40 million towards renovations including a new ticket lobby with a Lake Tahoe theme. With 72 daily departures to 15 non-stop cities and one-stop service to almost anywhere in the world, RTIA is located less than an hour from the slopes and has yet to experience a closure due to snow.
