2013/14 Lake Tahoe winter wrap-up

May 12th 2014

Northstar California powder skiing

Sad to admit it, but the winter season over.  It's time to store the skis and snowboards, reflect on the season, and start counting down to next winter.

What were your favorite moments of the 2013/14 season? Typically any day on the slopes equals a terrific day in my book, but below are five moments that stand out. Did I miss yours? Let me know in the comments.

1. Opening Day

It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve done this. The first day of the season is always something to look forward to – call it Christmas for skiers and riders. And like Christmas when you were a kid, falling asleep the night before can be difficult.

2. Olympics

Lake Tahoe sent nearly a dozen athletes to the Olympics. They in turn won more medals than some countries. Tahoe Pride was in evidence this winter, and we welcomed the athletes home with celebrations all around the lake.

3. Spring skiing and riding

Sunshine, long days, corn snow and events galore made for many awesome days on and off the slopes this spring. From live music at Sierra-at-Tahoe’s new plaza to Heavenly’s annual Spring Loaded to Squaw Valley’s Pain McShlonkey classic to Alpine Meadow’s Spring Music Series, you couldn’t help but turn a day of skiing into something special.

4. April Fools powder

Of all the storms this season, the early April one was one for the books. The cold smoke powder was no joke, and had skiers and snowboarders whooping and hollering like a bunch of kids.

5. Powder on closing weekend

Mother Nature did it again. A winter storm hit Lake Tahoe in late April, leaving over 2 feet of snow at Squaw Valley, Kirkwood and Alpine Meadows. Talk about ending the season on a high note!
